An Academic Event : My Experience of Participation

Technology allows us to connect the last mile on earth with ease. The world witnessed this remarkable journey from a local area network within the institute to the present era of the fourth-generation network. Also, the world is ready to launch the next fifth-generation fastest network connectivity globally.

Economic system evolved with the concept of a closed economy but later on came the era of an open economy where nations became more dependent on each other. There is now a mixed form of economy that combines the concept of self-sufficiency with interdependence.

Scholars offer many viewpoints and ideas relating to international relations. Despite that, most of them are more appealing since they convey a message that will strengthen the global ties mentioned below.

"For the only way in which a durable peace can be created is by world-wide restoration of economic activity and international trade."  James Forrestal

"It has been proven through studies by the World Bank and others that companies participating in international trade are more competitive."  Arancha Gonzalez

"Now the times have changed; the first thing is that we no longer live in a bipolar world. The world is interconnected and inter-dependent. You will have to connect with everybody at the same time. Even if there are two opposing countries, they will have to be friends."  Narendra Modi

Considering the importance of international relations, ICFAI Business School possesses an International Club that promotes discussion of different innovative ideas related to international relations, the equations between India and other countries, possible global alliances, and more.

The International Club hosted an event called Trade-O-Nation, where the students needed to present their views on the relationship between India and its neighbors. Since I was a political science student during my graduation, I was interested in participating. I know the fundamental factors responsible for solid or weak bilateral relations between two nations, including geographic, economic, demographic, cultural, and more.

I had only two days to get ready for the event, so I pulled up my socks. I choose to explain the bilateral trade relations between India and Sri Lanka. For this, I approached my college library for assistance in finding articles, magazines, and books on Indian and Sri Lankan relations. Here I found an ample amount of information, and now it's time to identify the pertinent facts and figures. Finally, I prepared for the presentation on the topic 'Bilateral Trade Relations between India and Sri Lanka'.

I felt quite nervous and excited before the event got underway. It began with a high energy level among the participants and audience. The first participant presented on Indo-Nepal relations, and I was the third in a row to elucidate the bilateral ties between India and Sri Lanka, rest others covered Indian relations with the rest seven neighboring nations. I started from an ancient perspective and have focused on how Indian mythology strongly ties to Sri Lanka. My next point was about the trading pattern since India's independence. I later discussed how geographical factors affect trade between these two nations and the challenges they face. In addition, I also mentioned the impact of the political aspect on the development of foreign policy and trade relations.

The government formed various policies and norms, such as the India-Sri Lanka Free Trade Agreement of 1988, that facilitated duty-free access and preference for selective goods and services. Aftermath, a chain of bilateral talks was there to strengthen relations. Also, both nations were ready to sign a document called Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA), which is still under consideration. Moreover, I prepared a graph representing the increase in imports and exports within the last twenty years between the nations.

I concluded by quoting xChetan Bhagat's saying, "Be so busy improving yourself that you don't have time to criticize others." and wish for strong bilateral relations between these two nations.

Every participant presented well. Now it's time to see the results. The judges were so excited to see the enormous talent in the students of ICFAI Business School and remarked on the seamless functioning of its administration. Moreover, they appreciated the participant's enthusiasm and zeal to learn more. They felt proud to announce two participants who did the best among others. Fortunately, my name was also there.

I was delighted to hear my name. It was a wonderful experience to be a part of such an event related to my area of interest. I am determined to make the most of every opportunity. Later, I received a trophy and a certificate of appreciation from the judges as an award.

My teacher once said you should maintain your emotions after the positive or negative result and look for your strength and weaknesses to improve upon. So I performed the same analysis to improve my performance in the future.

Thanks to ICFAI Business School, where I was able to develop myself and discover my hidden talents. They have several other cells, which means many more forthcoming events providing an opportunity to demonstrate my skills. I am willing to participate in them to nurture myself. This Post Graduate Program in Management is not just a course but a process to boost up career in the corporate world.
